[ ENROLLMENT ]
ELIGIBILITYLearn who’s eligible for BCU benefits and whom you can cover before you make your elections.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR COVERAGE?
You and the following family members are eligible for the BCU benefits in this guide if you are regularly scheduled to work 20 hours or more per week*:
- Your spouse
- Your domestic partner of the same or opposite gender
- Your children, including the children of your domestic partner, under age 26, are eligible for medical, dental, supplemental life, and accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage
During enrollment, remember to review your dependents’ names and Social Security numbers for accuracy.
* Business Travel Accident and Short- and Long-Term Disability benefits are available only to you, not family members.
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T ENROLL?
If you do not take action Nov. 4 – Nov. 15, 2024, your current elections will roll over into 2025, except for any Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) elections. Those spending accounts require active elections each year you wish to participate.
If you are a new hire and you do not enroll within 30 days of hire, you will receive company-provided basic benefits for 2025 at the employee-only coverage level: basic life, business travel accident, and basic short- and long-term disability insurance. You will not be able to contribute to an FSA or HSA. Note that you will not be able to make or change elections again until the next Annual Enrollment window unless you experience a qualifying life event.
WHEN DOES COVERAGE START?
Generally, the plan year runs January 1 – December 31.
New Hire Enrollment: Your benefits begin on your hire date or the date you become benefit eligible. You must enroll within 30 days of your hire date.
Be sure to give your medical, prescription, dental and vision providers your new plan information for your new coverage.
WHEN CAN I MAKE CHANGES?
Once you enroll, most of your choices are locked in until the end of the calendar year. You can only make changes during the plan year (January 1 – December 31) if you experience a qualifying life event. This is an event during the year that affects benefits coverage for you or your dependents, such as:
- Marriage or divorce
- Birth or adoption (or placement of a child)
- Gain or loss of coverage by your spouse or dependent child
- Death of a dependent
You have 31 days from the date of the event (or 60 days for a birth or adoption) to report the event to BCU Benefits. If you do not report the qualifying life event within 31 days, you cannot make any election changes until the next Annual Enrollment period (unless you experience another qualifying life event).
